Shital's-Kitchen: For my kitchen

For my kitchen

I love shopping! It's not just cooking but cooking and entertaining in style ;) As and when I buy some fun things for my kitchen, I will update this page. Feel free to leave some comments or ideas for my kitchen. We could have creative discussions and brainstorm more entertaining ideas.
Happy Cooking!

Straw Spoons   12/21/2012
While I was growing up, I always had a silver spoon straw to drink rose flavored milk. I was always looking to but those for my tall Mikasa glasses in which I would serve juice or falooda drink (milk with noodles and ice cream)

I finally found these steel straw spoons at Crate and Barrel at bought 10 of these!!
http://www.crateandbarrel.com/spoon-straw/s625887

These are great for falooda drink, watermelon drink with watermelon balls, Root beer float, Ice cream float and many more.

So watch out for fun drinks and entertaining recipes!

I like these Straw Spoons that come with a cleaner to clean the straws.

New Cook and Serve   12/21/2012
Another one in my kitchen! I had 2 reds and a green one. Bought a yellow pot yesterday :)

This is the collection of Terracotta pots. These have been tempered so cooking in them can be easy. Terracotta is safe for food, keeps nutritional value in tact and tastes good too. Best thing about these pots is that they are electric as well as gas stove safe, microwavable, oven safe and dishwasher safe. They can retain heat for a longer time thus great for slow cooking (or Dum). I normally make Paneer makhani, Dum Biryani and curries in these bowls. I cook in them, heat and serve in the same container. Great for entertaining!

Rectangular Stainless Steel Measuring Spoon Set

Yesterday, while I went to World Market to check out some new Life of PI collection, I bought these cute measuring spoons.

I like the shape since it it wasn't like traditional old fashioned spoons. I was looking to buy something in ceramic, but that would chip and break easily. This one is in steel, which makes it easy to maintain. I also like how it measures liquids too in "ml" :)

Although I do not use measuring cups and spoons often, I like to shop some unique items for my kitchen :)

I am excited to use these soon! You will see more pictures of this set of spoons with my other recipes.

Glasses     4/1/2013

Last week I went to The deYoung Museum of art as a part of our school field trip. The best part of the
museum is always a gift show! Each year I have found and bought unique and decorative things for my house and kitchen.

Guess what I got this year! These cute glasses! Whats so special about it? It does not have a flat bottom!! Just imagine a glass with no flat bottom. The drink in it will constantly move and will attract your attention towards it.

I like it and I am looking forward to using them soon :)

Pomegranate Deseeder     12/5/2013

Have you ever tried deseeding a pomegranate? The task is not difficult, but it stains your nails and fingers. I hate that! I would always put on food safe gloves, and carefully deseed the fruit.

Two days back I received this wonderful gift from one of my student's parents. It is an easy 60 second Pomegranate deseeder. I just couldn't believe it. They also sent a big, firm, delicious pomegranate, so there was no reason I had to wait to try this out.

 OMG! This worked!!

I have a pineapple corer, rotary garlic chopper, robot stirrer, and so much more. This Pomegranate Deseeder is surely a wonderful addition to my kitchen and you will see this again in few more recipes.

Mexican Hot Chocolate Pot and Frother        1/1/2014

Here is one of my Christmas shopping for my kitchen :) Hot Chocolate Olla De Barro Pot and Hot Chocolate Molinillo Frother. While I was at Crate and Barrel, this cute pot and frother reminded me of traditional Indian butter milk churner.

Olla De Barro  is a Mexican clay pot and Molinillo is a Mexican wooden whisk. Thanks to Google :)

This red clay pot is stove top safe, preferably used to boil milk and then mix in chocolate or cocoa. The wooden frother is wonderfully carved with intricate designs to not only help froth milk or butter milk,  but also look pretty in the kitchen. :)

Chinese Clay Pot       1/27/2014

A clay pot used in China to cook rice, vegetables, and meat. I found this cute pot at my favorite store: yes, The World Market! Glazed from inside, this pot can be used on stoves and in the oven. The wire around the pot helps even distribution of heat and clay retains heat for longer time, for even cooking. Even if you do not cook in it, looks ornamental and traditional to serve in. I would also use it to boil milk and ferment curd/yogurt like we do in India. Another great addition to my kitchen!

Coconut Shredder          2/22/2014

While I was in India, I had the same coconut shredder to obtain freshly shredded coconut for chutneys and garnishes. I finally found the same one at an Indian store here. Yes, I bought it to now make fresh chutney!

It has a stable suction base, that can be easily placed on your counter or table. Shredder blade is sharp enough to scrape coconut flesh and obtain fresh shred. Hold cut coconut under or over the blade, and simple rotate the handle. It's easy but should be handled carefully by adults only.

Great for garnishing or making coconut cake.

Fresh coconut water...my favorite, and healthy too.

Rolling Garlic Chopper          5/2/2014

Rolling Garlic Chopper: You would have seen these pictures in my Aloo Paratha post or mincing garlic picture in my Rasam wada post. I noticed I was receiving many comments and emails on question regarding this product. So here it is: Rolling Garlic Chopper, I love it!! Perfect to mince small quantities of garlic or green chillies or ginger, when you do not want to use a big blender or a grinder. The wheel, gear and blade comes off easily for easy washing and is dishwasher safe too. You just add garlic or chillies in the chopping compartment and roll like you would play with a toy car and it is done. It is available at Bed Bath and Beyond for $9.99 (save your 20% off coupon and buy it at a cheaper price) or on Amazon too. May be Shoppers Stop in India would have this too. I bought this for my family in India, and they love it too! So enjoy easy mincing with getting your hands smelly.

Robostir          10/19/2014

RoboStir: A battery operated device that stirs the food while you can sit back and relax or multitask. I use this to boil milk. Milk has the tendency to stick to the bottom of the pan and caramelize, imparting burnt flavor. No more burnt milk with this one. Also, making mawa or dehydrated milk for Indian sweets is easy. Now I do not have to constantly stand and stir milk while it boils.

SpreadThat! Butter Knife          10/19/2014

A new Diwali Gift for my kitchen...SpreadThat! Butter Knife. So what's so special about it??? It transfers your body heat to easily carve and spread cold butter. It is great for winters when room temperature butter also solidifies. This is going to be of great use in my kitchen lab!

       Wine Glass Clips       10/19/2014

Love it, love it, love it...ordered these Party Plate Glass Clips for my next party, and they were just delivered. These are so easy to be clipped onto any plate and can carry wine or champagne glasses easily. So convenient for guests to move around with their dinner plate and and their drink.

I read few comments on amazon before ordering these. The plastic is sturdy and it does work on good quality thick disposable paper plates. This product is great for you if you enjoy hosting parties.

Happy Shopping!!

    1. Hello Sanjay,

Buckwheat is called Kuttu in gujarati. If you go to traditional grocer (kirana wala) he should know kuttu is. If you are closer to Bhuleshwar area (proper Bombay) you will find fresh and cheaper Kuttu there. It is specially meant for upwas/fast. Hope this information helps you. Do write to me if you have any questions.

      Thanks,

    1. Hi Rashmi,
When I first moved to the US, I used hard anodized utensils from India. Last year I purchased a hard anodized cooking set with lids from Costco (Kirkland product). I really like it :) Easy to cook and clean. I also shop a lot from Bed Bath and Beyond or Marshalls. They have good deals on some products and I always save my Bed Bath Beyond 20% off coupon.
Hope this information helps you. Do write to me if you have any questions :)

      Happy Cooking!

    1. Hello Jayanthi,
I found these terracotta pots at Marshalls. They have various sizes and colors available. Crate and Barrel and Sur la Table also carry terracotta pots now. But, all of them do not work on stove, oven and microwave. So you will have to check the label. Do let me know when you find one for your kitchen :)

      Happy shopping,

    2. Hey Shital,

Great blog and recipes as well. Will love to follow. :)

Do you have small garlic chopper or the extra large version? I am planning to order the smaller one today. Just wanted to ask few questions. Is it really good for mincing ginger(bit doubtful coz of its hard texture). Have you ever tried it. And other than garlic, ginger and green chillies, can we use it for cilantro also?

Please don't mind if I am asking too many questions. :)

      Thanks

  16. Hi Shital,

I just moved to US sometime back. I was wondering if you could suggest a good mixer/ blender for making Indian Chutneys. I currently own a Ninja Pro but it doesn't work well for small quantities of chutney.

    Thank You.
