Baked Puri

Bhel has been my latest obsession! A dinner of a big bowl of veggies, dry chutney and puffed rice = BHEL You might be wondering why did I not specify fried sev noodle and crispy fried puris. Yes, I omit those...I love and indulge myself in a big bowl of delicious diet bhel. That's how I like to call it!

To add more crunch to my bhel, I baked, some crisp puris. Since they are loaded with flax seeds, jowar flour, and bajra flour with regular whole wheat flour, these are surely healthier than regular ones. Indeed, a great snack. Pack a small ziplock bag for a mid afternoon 100 calorie snack :)

For all my friends and family who have cooks or domestic help at home, bake these and store them for anytime healthy snack for you family.

In 2 cup of whole wheat flour, add 1/2 cup jowar flour, and 1/2 cup bajra flour

Mix 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp. flax seeds and 1 tsp. cumin seeds.

Mix all ingredients well.

Add 1 tbsp. olive oil or regular oil.

Using around 3/4-1 cup of water, make a stiff dough.

Put few drops of oil to knead the dough well.

Let the dough rest for 15-20 minutes.

While the dough could rest, I started looking for a shape I could use to make even looking puris. Use any shape you like. Your kids might love animal shapes or some alphabets too.

My shortlisted shapes.

Divide the dough into equal parts.

Grease the rolling surface and roll it evenly. Be careful, dough should not stick the surface.

Use a cookie cutter to cut as many puris from the dough you rolled out.

Prick each of the puris with a fork.

Remove extra dough and place each of the puris on a nonstick baking sheet.

Brush or spray some oil on each of them.
Bake in a 350F preheated oven for 10-15 minutes till they turn golden brown.

Beautiful color! Well cooked puris will slip easily through the baking sheet.

Store in an airtight container.

These would go well with hummus, cucumber raita dip or salsa too!
A Healthy Snack!!

  1. Hi Sheetal, Thank you for the recipe. I tried this today with a few modifications. I didnt have jowar or bajri flour, so I substituted it with Ragi flour. replaced flax seed with flax seed flour, added kasoori methi and dried curry leaves. Turned out great. Thanks again!
