Chocolate Barfi

It is the last day of Ganesh festival and on this day Ganesh idols are submerged in the sea or river. Huge processions of people dancing, kids performing traditional Lezim dance, drums, loudspeakers, flowers, are crowd shouting Ganpati Bappa...Morya, Pudchya Varshi Lawkar Ya, which means...'please come back soon next year'. Great memories of this day!

This day also happens to be my Birthday as per our Hindu calendar. Coincidentally, I share my Hindu calendar b-day with my dear brother in law, Gaurav (my sister's husband). This is the time when we wish each other with a 'wish you the same' phrase! :) How fun!!

While making variety of sweets these 9 days of Ganesh Puja,  chocolate had been on my mind since quite some days. So, today was the day to make our childhood favorite sweet, Chocolate Barfi. My aunt, Anu fui would bring this sweet for us often :)

Since I had already tried making mawa/solid milk before some days, it was easy to make chocolate barfi/chocolate flavored milk cake today.

This is surely a long process but, worth trying!

Start with boiling 6 cups of milk in a heavy bottom pan on a medium flame. Occasionally slow the flame to simmer and stir it too to avoid sticking at the bottom. This process might take an hour and a half.

When the water content in the milk totally evaporates and solidifies add 1/4 cup of sugar. Stir till the mixture leaves the pan which should take 4-5 minutes.

Turn off the heat. Divide the mixture into two equal parts. Pour one part on a greased surface. Flatten it to have even edges.

Mix 2-3 tbsp of cocoa powder to the remaining mixture. Turn on the heat and mix well.
Place this mixture over the first one and spread it evenly.
Spread a silver foil over it. (Optional)

Let the mixture cool completely before you cut into pieces.

Delicious, chocolatey Barfi is ready to serve!
We performed our last Ganesh Arti for the year!
Ganpati Bappa...Morya!
Pudchya Varshi...Lawkar Ya!!

Updated on 11/11/2015 Happy Diwali 2015
Last weekend we celebrated our first Diwali in our New Home. My parents are here and they have brought with them more than 100 years old Bal Gopal Idol that my great grand mother had carried from Karachi to India. I have seen my great grand mother performing a grand Thanksgiving or Annakut which my mom does now, and I got an opportunity to perform Annakut in my new house.
My chocolate Barfi was very popular. Kids as well as adults loved it and I was super happy :)

While I like to make mawa by boiling milk and reducing it, the process does take quite some time and specially when most sweets are made using mawa I used Milk Mawa Powder, dehydrated maw powder to make the process quick. Here is the recipe.

8 cups milk mawa powder
4 cups sugar
1 cup milk
3-4 tbsp. cocoa
2 tsp. Ghee

To make white layer:
Mix 4 cups milk mawa powder with 1/4 cup milk and start heating. When Mawa gets soft add 2 cups of sugar and mix till it forms lump and leaves the pan. Add 1 tsp. ghee and mix well. Spread the mixture into a thin layer on a greased tray or plate.

For chocolate layer:
Mix 4 cups milk mawa powder with 1/4 cup milk and start heating. When Mawa gets soft, add 2 cups of sugar and cocoa and mix till it forms lump and leaves the pan. Add 1 tsp. ghee and mix well. Spread the mixture on a white layer of barfi.

Let the barfi cool and set for few hours. Then cut into pieces and serve.

Milk- Mava powder is different from Milk Powder.

    1. Dhara, I have never tried reducing half and half, but it does sound doable. You can also use store bought mawa for this recipe so that you do not have to reduce it.
